Anxiety and Perfectionism
Feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure of your next steps?
Outwardly, you may seem calm and collected, while inwardly you're quietly managing a sense of chaos — tension, overwhelm, or an inability to switch off. Perhaps you find yourself anticipating what could go wrong, replaying conversations, questioning your decisions, or feeling responsible for keeping everything under control.
I often work with perfectionists, high achievers, and people-pleasers who feel that no matter how much they do, it's never quite enough. You may still be working, caring for others, maintaining relationships, and managing your daily responsibilities while experiencing a near-constant stream of worry beneath the surface. Over time, this can create distance from your values, purpose, and sense of self — and leave you feeling as though you are simply getting through the days rather than truly living them.
Anxiety does not always look like visible panic or distress. It often shows up as persistent overthinking, preparing for worst-case scenarios, replaying interactions, or finding it difficult to tolerate uncertainty. You might frequently seek reassurance, fear disappointing others, or feel as though you need to anticipate every possible outcome before you can relax.
Anxiety can also show up physically through muscle tension, headaches, digestive discomfort, restlessness, fatigue, difficulty sleeping, or a racing heart. You may feel irritable, emotionally overwhelmed, or constantly on edge without always knowing why. For some people, anxiety leads to avoiding unfamiliar situations, social events, important conversations, or everyday responsibilities. Although avoidance may bring temporary relief, it can gradually make life feel smaller.
Perfectionism is often less about wanting everything to be flawless and more about trying to avoid failure, criticism, disappointment, or uncertainty. It can look like procrastinating because you're unsure where to begin, over-preparing, struggling to make decisions, setting expectations that are difficult to sustain, or feeling unable to rest when everything on your to-do list feels urgent and nothing can be crossed off until it's perfectly complete. Even when you succeed, the relief may be brief before the expectations shift and you begin focusing on what you could have done better.
How Therapy Can Help You With Anxiety and Perfectionism
Our work may involve exploring patterns such as people-pleasing, reassurance-seeking, avoidance, and over-responsibility. Together, we can consider how these patterns developed, how they may be affecting you now, and what it could look like to respond to yourself with greater understanding and flexibility.
Counselling offers a supportive space to better understand the thoughts, emotions, physical sensations, and underlying needs connected to your anxiety. With care and curiosity, we can identify what may be pulling you out of alignment with what matters most and develop personalized strategies for navigating worry, overwhelm, and uncertainty.
This work may include:
- learning ways to regulate your nervous system
- creating some distance from your anxious thoughts
- unpacking your beliefs that contribute to perfectionism, self-criticism, or the pressure to remain in control
- reducing avoidance
- strengthening boundaries
- communicating more confidently
- building trust in your ability to handle uncertainty without pushing yourself beyond your capacity
Living well with anxiety is not necessarily about eliminating every worry or remaining calm in every situation. Likewise, moving away from perfectionism doesn't mean that you have to stop caring, abandon your goals, or lower every standard. It means learning how to pursue what matters without allowing anxiety or fear of getting it wrong to determine every decision.
Together, we can focus on meaningful actions you can take to create more room for authenticity, clarity, connection, and self-trust. Our goal is to help you move from simply getting through life toward living with greater intention and purpose — and building a life that feels grounded, fulfilling, and truly your own.
